The Place Value Odometer is an interactive visual counting tool that enables the user to set/change the value of a number (from 0.01 through to 999 999 999.99) by adding or subtracting powers of ten (i.e. 1, 10, 100, etc.).
The Place Value Odometer displays the total value of the number, the number written out in words and the decomposition of the number in terms of its place values.
Not only can the Place Value Odometer be used to support and reinforce understanding of counting patterns and place value concepts, it can also be used to model addition and subtraction calculation strategies, especially those involving place value partitioning.
By default, the ones, tens, and hundreds digits are visible, which enables targeting counting from 0-999. The user may then explore increasingly larger quantities by using the relevant switches to make the thousands and millions digits visible. The decimals switch can also be activated to reveal the tenths and hundredths digits, so that decimal values can be investigated.
