The Road traversing the Denominazione dei Vini DOC and DOCG area describes the lands where the great red wines of Valtellina are produced.

In Valchiavenna and Valtellina there are numerous prehistoric and historical remains: from rock engravings to castles and stately homes in urban centres and numerous sanctuaries that stand symbolically in a sea of vines. The cultivation of vines in this valley has always been an indispensable economic resource and has played a fundamental role in preserving the landscape.
The territory of the Wine and Food Road of the Valtellina is divided into five areas corresponding to geographical and historical boundaries: theContado di Chiavenna (Chiavenna and its environs), the Terziere di Sotto (Morbegno and its environs), the Terziere di Mezzo (Sondrio and its environs), the Terziere di Sopra (Tirano and its environs) and the Magnifica Terra (Bormio and its environs).

The routes among the terraced vineyards on the Rhaetian (northern) side of the Valtellina valley are very picturesque and scenic and can be toured by car, bicycle or on foot. They correspond to the production zones of the Vino Valtellina Superiore DOCG, extending from Maroggia (in the Commune of Berbenno) to the area of Sassella (between the Communes of Castione Andevenno and Sondrio); from Grumello (north-east of Sondrio) to Inferno (between the Communes of Poggiridenti and Chiuro). The Valgella route winds its way between the Communes of Chiuro and Teglio. Near the residential area of Tirano is the last route called Baruffini.
