OREANET-NC is based upon an approach of "participative science". It relies on observations provided by marine stakeholders to report the presence of the coral-eating starfish Acanthaster planci in New Caledonia. Developed by the French National Research Institute for Sustainable Development (IRD), the applications aims to develop an effective risk management strategy for this voracious species which can cause massive and widespread coral mortality.
To indicate the presence of acanthasters, simply open the application, click on the interactive map to locate your observation and enter the associated information (eg number of starfish sighted, date, depth range, etc.). The application runs partly offline, i.e. you can pre-fill the report and wait to be logged in to position the observation on the map and send the report. Reports sent by all users are visible on oreanet.ird.nc.
