Thousands of smartphones like yours will allow the monitoring of the whole territory

SeismoCloud is a crowdsourced project: everyone contributes simply by installing the app. The union of all small contributions is a great service for everyone.

SeismoCloud is a scientific research project carried out by the La Sapienza University of Rome (Department of Computer Science) and the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (Section Seismology and Tectonophysics). With everyone's contribution we are testing the system and we will be ready to send the alarms to achieve a certain number of active apps. Help us to spread the app among your acquaintances.


HOW DOES IT WORK

The application, when the phone or tablet is not used and it's placed on a horizontal surface, uses the smartphone's internal sensor (accelerometer) to detect the vibrations in the surrounding environment, behaving like a true seismograph (ie. a paperless seismograph and nib, which sends measurements to a central computer) and thus contributes to the detection of earthquakes.

In fact, when many smartphones in the same zone detect a vibration at the same time, an algorithm on the central computer compares the received data and makes an estimate of the distance within which the earthquake can constitute a danger for the population.

In case of danger in the province in which we find ourselves (for example the province where we live or that of the place where we are on holiday, etc.), we will be sent a notification that warns us of the earthquake in progress. The notification is sent a few seconds after the shock begins at the epicenter, and then can get there before the seismic wave (because it travels faster).

The application has been developed in such a way as to minimize energy consumption and bandwidth consumption, while ensuring constant detection throughout the day.
