The first step to becoming a pilot is deciding what type of flying you'll be doing, which will determine what level of pilot license you'll need. There are 4 basic types of pilot's licenses:

- Recreational Pilot: Permits: a pilot to fly with friends and family aboard, but only within the country of issuance.

- Private Pilot: Fly only with friends and family aboard, but valid all over the world.
Commercial Pilot: Allows the holder to fly large jet aircraft commercially, but not as a captain.

- Airline Transport Pilot: Permits the licensee to fly aircraft for a living anywhere in the world, and includes the certification to fly jets as Captain.

- Besides the class of pilot license, there are also additional certifications required depending upon the type of aircraft the pilot will fly...

Multi-Engine Rating: The holder is licensed to fly an aeroplane with more than one engine.

Instrument Rating: The holder is licensed to fly at night, in clouds, and poor weather.

Float Rating: The holder is licensed to take off and land on water in an aeroplane equipped with floats.

Instructor Rating: The holder is licensed to teach others how to fly..

Requirements for pilot licenses include having an excellent command of written and spoken English, the language universally used the world over by airport controllers and support staff.

All potential pilots must complete ground school, which is basically classroom education, followed by flight training to earn a pilot's license.

Before flying solo in any type of aircraft, a medical certification is required. Medical certificates are designated as first-class, second-class, or third-class. First class is required for airline transport pilots, second class for commercial pilots, and third class for the student, recreational and private pilots.

The minimum age limitations placed on anyone wanting to learn how to fly is 15 years of age. The minimum age for flight training, or to fly solo is 16. The minimum age to qualify for a Private Pilot License is age 17.

Learning how to become a pilot is time consuming and expensive, but the rewards are great. There is no other recreation or career as exhilarating as piloting an aircraft.
