ABOUT THE AUDIO GUIDE
The audio guide to the exhibition delves into early 20th-century history to trace the origins of Vincent van Gogh’s rise to fame. It reveals how a number of German gallery owners, collectors, critics, and museum directors played a special role in securing the painter’s place in history. The app contains numerous audio clips as well as images of 30 artworks and lasts around 60 minutes in all.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
MAKING VAN GOGH is the largest and most elaborate exhibition that the Städel Museum has ever presented to date. On display are 50 essential works, representing all periods of Van Gogh’s oeuvre, shown in relation to 70 further works by the likes of Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, Wassily Kandinsky, Paula Modersohn-Becker, and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner.

At the dawn of the 20th century, Vincent van Gogh’s singular painting style became a source of inspiration and delight for a whole generation of upcoming German artists. His works went on show in exhibitions, were coveted by private collectors, reviewed by critics, and acquired by museums – with the Städel Museum being no exception. MAKING VAN GOGH tells of Vincent van Gogh’s unique posthumous success story in Germany and the special part he played as a vanguard figure of modern painting and a role model – painterly and spiritual – for the German Expressionists.
