Game rules of Spanish Civil War - History Games

History (from Wikipedia)

The Second Spanish Republic was proclaimed when King Alfonso XIII left the country following municipal elections in which anti-monarchist candidates won the majority of votes, and the Spanish population celebrated the beginning of the Republic and social pressure made the political regime change.

On July 18, 1936, mutinous Spanish Army troops led by Generalissimo Francisco Franco invaded the Spanish mainland from Morocco, with the goal of overthrowing Spain's elected Republican government. This was the beginning of the bloody Spanish Civil War.

Spain was thus left militarily and politically divided.

The Nationalist forces received munitions and soldiers from Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy, while the communist Soviet Union and socialist Mexico offered support to the Republican (Loyalist) side. Other countries, such as the United Kingdom and France, operated an official policy of non-intervention.

Many non-Spaniards, often affiliated with radical communist or socialist entities, joined the International Brigades, believing that the Spanish Republic was a front line in the war against fascism.

Goal
The goal of this Turn-based grand strategy wargame is to control all states of the Spanish mainland. A game last about 2 hours.

Sides
You may play the Nationalists or the Republicans.

Game elements

There is the main map showing the different territories. Nationalists territories are marked as blue and Republican territories are marked as red. Each state can have troops, generals and fortifications. On top left, the war level is shown (100% means 100% reinforcement bonus) and the morale level is shown (the flag - 100% means 100% fighting value in battles). On the top right status of Europe is visible. You can zoom in and out the map.

Movement and Attack
Movement and attacks are possible between neighbour territories only. When you plan to attack consider your morale level and troop strength compared to your enemy's. First press on the origin territory and then on the destination territory. Select then the amount of troops to move or attack. Under "Misc. - Go to" you can set up a distant march without sending the troops for each territory passing. You cannot use select specific troops types, e.g. moving artillery only. It is automatically done for you. Units have different fighting capabilities. Those ones can be seen in the territory view.

Battles

After you hit the next turn button, your moves and your enemy's move are considered and executed in abritary order. If it comes to a battle, you have the option to use special battle cards to help the outcome of the battle in your intension (first the attacker can play a card then the defender and so on). All battles are automatically played by the computer (future version of this game will allow to take command in the battles). Each battle have 20 turns, if the attacker is not able to control all fields in the middle of the map seperating the two sides in one turn, he or she will lose. Fighting takes place during a battle. Whenever units attacking their fighting value is calculated an applied to the enemies units atacked. The fighting power is directly influeced by the Morale Level, Generals, fortifications and random throws (its base is shown on the bottom).

Cards
Two groups of cards exist. The first group can be played on the main map, e.g. getting more reinforcement. The second group can be played before a battle starts only, e.g. changing the bonus level of your side. Cards can be exchanged for reinforcment points and vice versa ("Misc. - Draw card" or "Misc. - Trade Card").
History and events cards are special cards which will have deep impact on the outcome of the game.
