Billster handles these situations because he keeps a list of expenses incurred and for each one he takes into account who actually paid and who participated in that expense. At each instant you can check for each member of the group how much you spent, how many expenses you paid for your own pocket (ie, anticipated for the group) and how much money you should receive or give and from/to who.
