The Details:

Nutrition Explorer downloads an Android compatible version of the USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference, Release 24. The downloaded database includes the October 2011 updates.

To search the database, you can select All Food Groups or any one of the 25 Food Groups; enter up to four search strings to scan food descriptions; filter for high and low nutrient content; and require an association with Footnotes, LanguaL Factors, or a Key Food. All search criteria are optional.

Searching the database generates the Food Description List. The entries in the list consist of two parts. The first is the highlighted Food Description prefixed by the National Database Number (NDB). The NDB is a unique identifier for the Food Description. The NDB number is not part of the description. The NDB is provided to assist if you query the USDA online database.

The second part of the Food Description entry is an information section. Scientific names, amounts of refuse, and refuse descriptions display when available.

From the Food Description list, you can select a generic Food Facts label, two versions of a detailed Nutrition List, a LanguaL Factors list, and a Footnote list.

The label and the Nutrition Lists access thee WEIGHT table. The table supplies additional weights common to a specific food description. The weight information is based on the household measures for the food item (for example, 1 cup, 1 tablespoon, 1 fruit, 1 leg). Weights are given for edible material without refuse, that is, the weight of an apple without the core or stem, or a chicken leg without the bone, and so forth. Tapping on the description in Label or the Nutrition List will display Recalculate Menu.

All of the major screens have Help and About. Help is a quick reference for the functions available on the screen. The About screens are the product’s user manual.

Warning Will Robinson:

Download tests using both 3G and 4G networks have exhibited highly variable download speeds. Some downloads have been as slow as 50 kilobytes a second (20+ minutes). Download times for 3G were normally about 600 to 660 seconds. For 4G networks, normal was around 350 seconds.

Wi-Fi downloads have been consistent with the rated speed of the connection. Wi-Fi downloads have been from 195 to 240 seconds at speeds from 300 to 370 kilobytes/second. Wi-Fi downloading is highly recommended where available.

Both Wi-Fi and cell phone network connections have been consistently failing when the phone goes to sleep. To prevent the phone from sleeping, Nutrition Explorer captures the Wake Lock while downloading. This keeps the phone awake during the download. The lock is released when the download completes
