A fishing reel is a round spool device mounted on an axle attached to a rod called a fishing rod. Its purpose is to deploy and retrieve the line for catching fish, plain and simple. When fishing, it is crucial to have the right type of reel to ensure a disaster free trip. Using the wrong equipment can lead to personal injury if the rod or line snaps from not having strong enough tools. So, when fishing for large, powerful fish in saltwater, use a saltwater reel, and when fishing for smaller, less powerful fish, opt for a freshwater reel.
All reels will hold your line. A reel body can be made of plastic, aluminum, steel, or graphite. Which is better depend on the kind of fishing you want to do. Plastic is great for the beginner and children who want to get in on the enjoyment of catching fish, as far that goes. For the more experienced fisherman, aluminum is the way to go, because of its durability for rigorous fishing. You may be dropping your rod at times or maybe it will fall over, get bumped up against something, or something else could happen.
Speed and Gear Ratio - The speed at which your wheel rotates will affect the level of control you have over the reel. To determine what speed you need for your reel, you'll need to look at the gear ratio of your reel. The gear ratio indicates how many times the reel rotates with the rotation of the handle. A higher gear rotation means the gear will rotate faster. For new fishers, a slow to mid range gear rotation is going to be the most effective for control.
Spinning Reels - The spinning reel is probably the most common reel used today. From experienced anglers to beginners, the spinning real is the most versatile reel and can be used for almost any type of fishing. This reel also called an open face reel. the line spool is exposed and has a bail you flip to cast or let your line out. Spinning reels can be used for many species of fish from pan fish to walleyes, bass, northern pike, trout and many more.
One other thing you should know is that there are a few different types of reels out there that vary in size and purpose. There are spinning reels, which are most popular in use today, for spin casting, which is great for children and the beginner. There is bait casting used by anglers who want to cast larger baits and catch big fish. Of course, there are the fly fishing reels that have fewer parts. There are also Specialized reels you see mounted on boats.
It's also important to consider the material your reel is made of. Generally, spinning reels are made from either graphite or aluminum. There are pros and cons to both materials. Aluminum reels are very strong, but they can also be very heavy, which can be a challenge for some fishers. However, their construction tends to be more solid. Graphite reels are lighter and easier to handle, which make them a good choice for beginner fishers. They're also essential for anyone who fishes in saltwater, because graphite does not corrode in the same way other materials do.
Bait Casting Reels - The bait cast reel is the most difficult reel to learn to use. We don't recommend this reel for the beginner or younger kids. You will have a lot of headaches if your new to fishing. They have a great advantage if you cast a lot of heavier lures because of the accuracy and the distance you can cast. These reels are commonly used by bass and musky fisherman. The bait casting is my reel of choice when targeting big fish.
