A varicose vein is a permanent dilation of a superficial vein impeding the return of blood to the heart muscle. Varicose veins are dilated veins that are bluish in color. Varicose veins develop most often in the legs, but also on the thighs.
The varicose veins of the lower limbs correspond to abnormal dilations of veins located on the surface of the lower limbs. They are frequently found in the disease called chronic venous insufficiency and may be due to several mechanisms. The blood flows from the small veins on the level of the feet, towards the larger veins, going up towards the heart. In normal functioning, this is made possible by three mechanisms: the pressure generated by the contraction of the heart, the contraction of the muscles, especially when walking which allows an additional impulse in this direction, and the existence of small valves, located on the path of the superficial veins, which prevent the blood from descending. If there is a problem with these valves or there is an obstacle to the progression of the blood, venous insufficiency appears. This causes an accumulation of blood in the most affected veins and the appearance of varicose veins. Some factors increase the risk of developing lower extremity varicose veins, including: heat, sedentary lifestyle, pregnancy, prolonged standing and poor circulation.
Treatments for varicose veins vary according to the intensity of the manifestations and the degree of venous insufficiency. They include, above all, essential preventive measures and the frequent use of the means of compression. Only a doctor can advise you on the best treatment for you.
