Mega Millions began on August 31, 1996 under the name of Big Game. The first draw took place on September 6, 1996, with the participation of six states: Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan and Virginia.
After an exciting growth of the game in 1997, a draw was added on Tuesday in February 1998. Players had a greater choice of numbers and a "cash payment" option in January 1999. In May 1999, New Jersey became the seventh Member State.
In May 2002, the multi-state game received the new name of "Mega Millions". New York and Ohio became Member States. The game's matrix and prize amounts were modified to give players more excitement.
In September 2002, Washington became the 10th Member of the League, followed by Texas in December 2003. In June 2005, the California was on the 12th anniversary, consolidating Mega Millions in that country's most-played multi-stage jackpot game.
On January 31, 2010, 23 other state lotteries joined Mega Millions following the signing of a historic cross sell agreement between Mega Millions and Powerball. With the addition of additional lotteries since, Mega Millions is now played in 46 jurisdictions: 44 states plus the District of Columbia and the US Virgin Islands.
On March 30, 2012, Mega Millions made history by winning the world's largest prize of all jackpot games: $ 656 million. The jackpot was I spotted in three games, winning tickets in Illinois, Kansas and Maryland. This record in the lottery industry lasted nearly four years until it was overshadowed for a jackpot of $ 1.586 billion in Powerball in January 2016; Mega Millions joins the $ 1 billion club on October 23, 2018.
